International camp "Bioterra"

July 10 - 24*, 2009

Session for undergraduates, postgraduates and specialists engaged in different fields of biological scientific research

Objectives:

  • Support of scientific research works, ecological education, and training.
  • Joining of the youth to the World Wildlife Heritage, ways of its investigation and preservation.
  • Experience with different cultures and languages, and with the conduct of scientific field work in a harsh environment*.
  • Introduction to a wide range of biological phenomena and research opportunities in the Bering seaside.
  • Discussion of current controversies and themes in biodiversity.

Expedition is held on the field base of the State Natural Biosphere Preserve “Komandorsky” (the Commander Islands, to the north-east from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky).

* Participants must be in good health, be capable undertaking long, strenuous hikes carrying substantial loads, and be willing to camp under primitive and remote conditions.

Programme of the school includes:

Young Researchers School (YRS) (lectures, practical classes on methods of conducting field works for flora and fauna studying):

  • Studying of the river salmon ecosystem, and biology of salmon.
  • Goebotanical research of the north-western coast of the Bering Island.
  • Species definition of the sea animals.
  • Phenological research.
  • Ornithological excursions in nature.

Seminars:

  • Traditional ways of nature-use.
  • Plants being eaten.

! Basic conversational ability in either English or Russian is required.

! The organization fee for participation is 20000 rub per person (travel cost Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky - the Bering Island – Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, living, meals)
